Songfacts®:

  • Ethel Cain is the stage persona of Hayden Silas Anhedönia, whose debut album, Preacher's Daughter, is an American Gothic saga that offers a haunting exploration of death, violence, and the deeply tangled roots of generational trauma.

"American Teenager" introduces us to Cain's world with a deceptive, heartland rock gloss. It has all the hallmarks of a classic high school anthem: underage drinking, Friday night football, Sunday morning at church. But beneath its nostalgic shimmer lies a meditation on faltering faith - both in religion and the fabled American Dream - and a sobering glance at the sacrifices of military service on small-town communities.

"Growing up, I was surrounded by visions of NASCAR, rock 'n' roll, and being the one who would change everything," Cain explained. "They make you think it's all achievable, that if nothing else, you should at least die trying. What they don't tell you is that you need your neighbor more than your country needs you. This song is my frustration with what the 'American Teenager' is supposed to be, but never actually has a chance of becoming."
  • Cain produced the track and co-wrote it with Steven Mark Colyer, delivering a blend of heartland rock, indie folk, country rock, and ambient pop. With its wide-open soundscapes and undeniable hooks, it's more accessible than the rest of her darker and more experimental discography.
  • The music video, directed by Cain herself, takes this tension between past and present even further. Filmed in her hometown of Perry, Florida, Cain dons her mother's vintage cheerleading uniform and revisits the local high school football field. "Looking at old pictures of my mom at my age, cheering on that same field, was a huge inspiration when I wrote this song," Cain shared. "It only felt right to play in her footsteps for the video."
  • "American Teenager" struck a chord far and wide. The track was lauded by the likes of Pitchfork, Paste, and Insider as one of the best songs of 2022, and it even landed on former President Barack Obama's annual playlist - sparking no small amount of surprise, given its subtle but biting anti-war critique.
  • Taylor Swift included "American Teenager" on the pre-show playlist for her The Eras Tour.
  • Preacher's Daughter didn't chart when it was first released in 2022, but its impact quietly grew over time. Thanks to a steadily building cult following, the album saw a resurgence with its long-awaited vinyl release in April 2025. Between April 4 and April 10, it sold 37,000 copies - enough to debut at #10 on the Billboard 200.

The milestone made Cain the first openly transgender artist to earn a Top 10 album in the US.
