Songfacts®:

  • Simons penned this tune with her songwriting partner Mike Hamilton (they are also known as the writing team Topline Ink). She told the story of the song to Artist Direct: "That song was really natural. I heard the beat, and the word 'Renegade' came to me. That's how my partner Mike Hamilton and I write. It's the honest truth. I love it. It's one of my favorite songs. In my head, it felt like I had a megaphone in front of my mouth. That's how writing the whole song felt."
  • A renegade is an outlaw or rebel and its outsider connotations have appealed to several other songwriters. Other tunes titled 'Renegade' includes ones by Daughtry, Paramore and Styx.
