Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Faces lead singer Rod Stewart goes for a ride on his bicycle and gets invited to a party. It's a highfalutin affair that he quickly disrupts by getting drunk and disorderly. He's escorted, but had himself a real good time.

In his Storyteller anthology, Stewart wrote: "One of my 'jolliest' set of lyrics. Recording with the Faces was always an occasion for a party - with many comings and goings and a great deal of nonsense, foul play and high shenanigans all 'round."
  • Stewart wrote the song with his Faces bandmates Ronnie Wood and Ronnie Lane. Rod had a lot going on at this time - he released his second solo album, Gasoline Alley, that same year (1970). Wood and Lane both played on the album.
  • "Had Me a Real Good Time" was first released as a standalone single in 1970; this version runs 2:54. In 1971, Faces released a new version on their album Long Player that goes 5:50. In this extended version, we find out the skinny girl who invited him to the party only came for the beer, and that Rod fell off his bike on the way home.
