Songfacts®:

  • "Clumsy" was produced by Fergie's Black Eyed Peas colleague Will.I.Am. She told Interview magazine: "Will is such a great musical encyclopedia. I've learned so much from being in the studio with him and talking to him."

In the same interview Fergie said about this song: "It's kind of a throwback to '60s pop - a modernized version of that. I do a little speech, like the Shangri-Las did in their songs. The vernacular of it very much pays homage to that period."
  • This samples the 1956 song "The Girl Can't Help It" by Little Richard, which peaked at #9 in the UK and #49 in the US. Little Richard's song was the theme from one of the first great Rock movies, The Girl Can't Help It, which starred Jayne Mansfield.
  • This appears on the soundtrack of the 2007 movie Knocked Up.
  • When this song climbed into the American Top 10 in November 2007, it resulted in the record for the longest span of Billboard top 10 hits by a songwriter being broken. Bobby Troup, the composer of "The Girl Can't Help It," had his first top 10 in June 1941, when Sammy Kaye's recording of his song "Daddy" debuted on the Best Sellers in Stores chart. When "Clumsy" reached the Billboard Top 10 nearly 66 years and 6 months later it shattered the record for the longest chart span for a songwriter. Bobby Troup is probably best known for being the composer of Nat King Cole's hit "Route 66."
  • Another consequence of "Clumsy" entering the Billboard Top 10 is that Fergie became the first female artist to pull 5 top 10 hits from a debut album since Paula Abdul did so with a quintet of songs from Forever Your Girl in 1989 and 1990.
