Songfacts®:

  • "Judgement Day" explores the themes of mortality, spirituality, and the quest for redemption. The track draws its inspiration from the near-death experiences of Five Finger Death Punch guitarist Zoltan Bathory and vocalist Ivan Moody, channeling the raw emotions and intensity that arise when confronting one's own mortality.
  • The song is a plea for mercy as Moody journeys through the afterlife. He acknowledges his imperfections while vehemently asserting that he's not inherently evil. Moody has faced his own inner demons, enduring pain and suffering, and now he's walking through fire and brimstone. The absence of pearly gates leaves him questioning whether he'll be judged for his past transgressions.
  • Bathory set out to write a song that soundtracks the process of death. "I had two near-death experiences and very spiritual experiences where I wanted to create that sound, like what you hear," he told Finland's Janne Vuorela. "In the process of dying, the perception of sound gets kind of weird; everybody gets broken down, almost like you hear the sample rate of your own mind. The sound is not actually continuous but there are tiny, tiny gaps between. And as your body is shutting down, this becomes very apparent. And so we created the song 'Judgment Day' and literally built the song around that - like, how does it sound like when you die? There's a sound; there's a sound that you hear."
  • Bathory and his bandmates built the song from the guitarist's concept and gave it to Moody. Because the vocalist had once actually flatlined and died before being brought back to life, he recognized its significance. "He was, like, 'This gets me freaked out, because I've been in this place; I know what this sound is,'" said Bathory. "And for a while he didn't even wanna record it because he thought, like, 'Wow. Every time I listen to this song, it takes me back to that place where I was dying.' And then eventually he actually did the song."
  • The music video, directed by Nick Peterson, stars Moody as a vigilante comic book hero on a mission to dismantle a human trafficking ring. The narrative-driven visual concept, crafted by Moody himself, is brought to life with animation by Tristan Zammit and Rodrigo Silveira.
