Songfacts®:

  • "Wanna Be" is a sizzling collab between GloRilla and Megan Thee Stallion that's all about staying independent and securing your own bag.

GloRilla spits truth bombs about modern love, letting men know who's really running things. Megan Thee Stallion? She's on her "don't play me" tip, dissing fake friends. Together, they're all about ditching lame dudes who are trying to hold them back.
  • This is the first collab between GloRilla and Megan. GloRilla opened for the Houston Hottie on her 2024 Hot Girl Summer Tour, so it makes sense they cooked up something together.
  • Ace Charisma, Payday, MKMentality and Yo Gotti are on production duties. It is built on samples from two Southern hip-hop classics: instrumentation from Soulja Boy's "Pretty Boy Swag" and vocals from Project Pat's "Don't Save Her."
  • GloRilla dropped "Wanna Be" on April 5, 2024, as the second single from her debut mixtape, Ehhthang Ehhthang. Megan wasted no time turning up the heat, starting a twerk challenge to the song on Instagram. GloRilla soon joined in, followed by Latto, Cardi B, SZA and Coi Leray among others.
  • The Benny Boom-directed music video finds GloRilla and Megan crashing a frat party where they show off their dance moves.
  • Cardi B jumped on the remix, which was dropped on May 31, 2024. She shades multiple people during her verse, most notably Bia in response to the rapper previewing a new diss track targeting her. The feud between Cardi B and Bia reportedly started in 2023, and the two continued to trade shots. It culminated in Cardi B's "Like What (Freestyle)" released in March 2024, with a vocal performance imitating Bia.

Glorilla and Cardi B previously worked together on "Tomorrow 2."
  • The rapper Plies brought legal action against GloRilla, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, and Soulja Boy in November 2024, claiming that "Wanna Be" infringes on his 2008 track "Me & My Goons." Plies alleged that the "Wanna Be" sample of Soulja Boy's "Pretty Boy Swag" illegally borrows elements from his song.

Plies withdrew his copyright infringement lawsuit four months later when he filed a motion to dismiss the case "without prejudice" on March 14, 2025, allowing for the possibility of refiling in the future.
