Songfacts®:

  • Before forming Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968, Stephen Stills dated Judy Collins, the subject of the CSN song "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," released on their debut album in 1969. In this song, his bandmate Graham Nash sends him a message.

"'Wounded Bird' is a song I wrote for Stephen and Judy Collins," Nash said in a Songfacts interview. "When Judy and Stephen were together, it made perfect sense to us all, but I wanted to just insert a word of caution that sometimes love goes in a different way than you think it does. And so it's just a word of caution to my friend Stephen about his relationship with Judy."
  • "Wounded Bird" is part of Graham Nash's debut solo album, Songs For Beginners. The only British member of Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young), he was a member of The Hollies before forming the group. After CSN&Y released their second album in 1970, all four members put out solo albums.
