Songfacts®:

  • Green Day hit it big in Berkeley, California. Tightwad Hill is the nickname for Charter Hill, the big hill where college students who would rather not buy a ticket watch football games at the University of California, Berkeley. >>>
    Suggestion credit:
    Pete - Seattle, WA
  • Far from a nostalgic look at Tightwad Hill, this song depicts the drug use and illicit activities that took place there:

    Town of lunatics
    Begging for another fix
    Turning tricks for speedballs

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong wrote from a dark place for Insomniac, the follow-up to their immensely popular album Dookie. There's even a song on the album called "Jaded," which pretty much sums up his mindset. A lot of this had to do with lack of sleep (per the album title) - Armstrong was burned out from work and was a new father, so he had a bad case of "Brain Stew."

  • DevonI have been up Tightwad Hill a couple of times to watch the Cal Games. I hope they go to another bowl game this year! Great song by Green Day, as they are from Berkeley.
  • Tanya from London, Englandlove this song. can relate alot to it. not one of my faves but it still rocks
  • Mister Penguin from San Francisco-ish, CaYep. It wasn't mainstream enough for America, so they didn't buy it. My favorite song off of Insomniac as well.
