Songfacts®:

  • "The Waiting Game" is a sweeping, lilting song where Harry Styles pins down something most people recognize but rarely admit: the way we romanticize our own paralysis. It's a song about the slow arithmetic of avoidance, where every small justification adds up to nothing at all.
  • The idiom "to play a waiting game" - meaning to deliberately delay action or a decision, either to gain advantage or to avoid commitment - dates to the late 1800s. The phrase derives from the concept of waiting as if it were a strategic game with rules and outcomes, patience deployed not as virtue but as avoidance. In Harry Styles' usage, the idiom is turned inward and made self-critical: he is not waiting strategically, but stalling, confusing passivity with patience, and calling that enough.
  • After wrapping his record-breaking Love On Tour in July 2023 - a 169-show, nearly two-year run that became one of the highest-grossing tours in history - Styles stepped away from music entirely, spending an extended period living quietly in Italy before beginning work on what would become his fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.

Speaking to Zane Lowe, Styles described "The Waiting Game" as the first song to emerge from this Italian interlude: a moment of uncomfortable clarity. He recognized a cycle: behave the same way, write about it beautifully, receive applause, repeat.

"That was what we had," he said. "I just liked being that honest with myself about what I was doing, with music, with my life, with my relationships, and with cycles I'd got into. And you try and you always justify playing the waiting game. You try messing with your own design, playing the waiting game, and it all adds up to nothing."
  • The Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. title isn't just a quirky phrase; it's a philosophy Styles actively tries to live by.

"It's a life mantra," he explained on the Hits Radio Breakfast Show with Fleur East, Will Best, and James Barr. "It's unhealthy to disco all the time, so loving and moving through your life with love, and then taking a break every now and again to have some fun, is a really good way to approach your life."

Styles also linked the idea to his time living in Italy during his hiatus, joking that the culture helped shape the album's title. "You can probably stop [kissing] to eat and stuff - definitely an extended lunch break - and then right back to it," he said. "I spent a lot of time with Italians the last year or so and they're kissing all the time, so it's just art imitating life."
  • The song sits at a crucial junction on Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. Co-written with his regular collaborators Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, it appears as track 6: the album's emotional hinge. Before it comes "Taste Back," which looks outward at a complicated former partner. "The Waiting Game" turns that same scrutiny inward, and track 7, "Season 2 Weight Loss," announces the resolution. Together, the three tracks form the album's most searching, self-critical sequence.
