Songfacts®:

  • Although this song is attributed to Henry VIII (by Henry VIII!) it is based on a work that appears in a 1501 Venetian manuscript. Henry VIII was not born until 1491, and although he was a competent musician and fair composer, he was no Alma Deutscher, much less Mozart. Having said that, he did write another very fine song: "Past Time With Good Company," or "Pastyme wt good companye," as it was originally called. >>>
