Joe Goddard (vocals, synthesizer and percussion) told The NME February 6, 2010 about this Euro club sounding track: "People have said it sounds a lot like 'La Isla Bonita' by Madonna. To me it sounded like 'Good Life' by Inner City."
Al Doyle (guitar, synthesizer, percussion, backing vocals) explained to The Yorkshire Evening Post that the lyrics are about "the malaise of living in a world where there's climate change and finding solace in the arms of your partner."
"It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" was inspired by a dream where Michael Stipe conjured up images of people with the initials L.B.: Lester Bangs, Leonid Breshnev, Lenny Bruce and Leonard Bernstein.
