Songfacts®:

  • Imagine Dragons kicked off a new era with "Eyes Closed." Released on April 3, 2024, it was their first music since the 2022 album Mercury - Acts 1 & 2. The track is a genre gumbo, a musical stew with something for everyone as elements of alternative, rap, electronic, rock and industrial mingle together.
  • Lyrically, this is a fist-pumping fight song about conquering adversity. Lead singer Dan Reynolds kicks things off with a rap-tinged confession – this guy's been through the wringer. But then the chorus explodes and Reynolds declares himself invincible. Obstacles? He laughs them off, boasting he could do it all "with my eyes closed."

The second verse is Reynolds doubling down on his resilience. Forget medication and self-help – this is a man who's stared into the abyss and emerged unbroken. Knocked down? A blip. He's got dreams to chase.
  • According to Reynolds, "Eyes Closed" marks a return to the band's roots. After a well-deserved break spent reconnecting with loved ones, Reynolds felt a renewed itch to crank out the kind of music that first sparked their fire. Of course, a decade on the road leaves its mark, and the world looks a whole lot different through the eyes of a seasoned rockstar.

"But some things will always remain the same," he said. "It's finding that right balance of nostalgia and freshness that brings me the most joy in the studio. We had a lot of fun making this one."
  • Reynolds wrote "Eyes Closed" with Imagine Dragons guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and the Swedish production duo Mattman & Robin. These Swedes are no strangers to the Imagine Dragons sound. They've been behind some of the band's biggest hits, including "Believer," "Enemy" and "Bones."
  • The music video is positively dripping with special effects. We see Dan Reynolds get whumped in a car crash only to find himself exploring an ancient temple in his dreams.
  • Imagine Dragons released a remix for "Eyes Closed with Colombian singer J. Balvin on May 3, 2024. Balvin delivers a fresh verse entirely in Spanish, adding a Latin layer to the experience. The remix also boasts a brand-new bridge section and added ad libs throughout.
