Songfacts®:

  • "Worthy" is the title track of India.Arie's eighth studio album; she had the title before the song, which is unusual for her. She said: "I wanted to remind people that even though the world ordains that you have to 'do' or 'be' something to be 'worthy,' that's not true. There is nothing special we have to do or be, we all are worthy once we arrive at that realization. A person who feels empowered in that way is a much more powerful force in this world."
  • Arie's favorite definition of the word "worthy" is "deserving of regard and respect." She explained that all the songs on the album "implicitly or explicitly carry the message and the energy of the word."
  • It was Oprah Winfrey who inspired India.Arie to call the album Worthy. She explained to Billboard that during an interview the talk show host asked her "how long unworthiness had been my calling card." The singer realized that though she didn't feel unworthy inside she could see how she was "giving off that energy to others." The incident made her want to explore why Oprah had asked that question.
