Songfacts®:

  • "Feel Like This" tells the story of Ingrid Andress finding a love that's right after leaving a turbulent relationship.

I've been to pretty dark places
    Stuck in toxic situations
    But you taste like stability
    And that's new for me
  • In the opening verse, Andress reflects on the manipulation, gaslighting, and jealousy she's endured in the past. This set the scene for a picture of true love where she enjoys:

    Homemade cooking
    Backyard kissing
    Hold the door open
    Sunday, sleepin' in
    Baby, I'm leanin' in
Conversations where she can tell he's listening
  • Andress co-wrote the piano-and-strings-driven song with pop singer-songwriter Julia Michaels and Nashville songwriter-producer Sam Ellis (Andress' 'Lady Like," Lady A's "What If I Never Get Over You").

Andress and Michaels had been threatening to write together for a while, and "Feel Like This" came together when the two synchronized their schedules for a songwriting appointment at Ellis' home. During their session, the two women discovered they'd both been through something similar.

"Her and I had recently gotten out of bad relationships, and then we had both randomly just started falling in love with new people, so it was very organic," Andress recalled to Billboard. "We were telling our story and our journey to how we got there, because we both at the time were just in such a happy place romantically."

Inspired by their recent romantic experiences, they wrote a song that begins with manipulation and emotional abuse before finding a happy and healthy romance.
  • I thought I knew what
    I knew what love was
Guess I didn't know at all
'Cause I don't know what this is
But I think love's supposed to feel like this

The title came when Michaels spontaneously uttered the central line of the chorus, "I think love's supposed to feel like this," while they tried to capture the comforting emotion they were experiencing. Ingrid Andress initially thought "Feel Like This" was too mundane for her songwriter instincts, stating, "Sounds boring." Ultimately, it was the perfect fit, alluding to the song's optimistic essence without being overly exuberant.

"We're both emo songwriters," Andress said of her and Michaels. "I thought we were going to write a sad song that day, and we did not."
  • Warner/Nashville released "Feel Like This" as the third single from Good Person on February 6, 2023. It's accompanied by a motorcycle-themed video. Directed by Olivia Bee, the visual follows Andress as she recovers from a toxic relationship and eventually finds new love.

Bee also directed the videos for Andress' "Good Person" and "Pain."
