  • It is not often that you encounter a song so short, so profoundly silly, and yet so oddly successful that it manages to elbow its way into charts. But such is the case with "Steve's Lava Chicken," a 34-second musical jolt from A Minecraft Movie, a 2025 film based on the video game Minecraft, a place where chickens lay square eggs and gravity is mostly a suggestion.

"Steve's Lava Chicken" is a culinary fever dream set to music, a love letter to absurdity, and perhaps the only song in history to make you genuinely wonder what happens when poultry meets magma.
  • A Minecraft Movie follows a group of four hapless humans unceremoniously yanked into the game's cuboid universe and guided by a hero named Steve, played with exuberant oddness by Jack Black.

In the real world, setting a chicken on fire is frowned upon, but in Minecraft, it's a recipe. "Steve's Lava Chicken" is a blisteringly brief jingle about just that; a spicy dish created by fusing a Minecraft chicken with a bucket of lava. It all unfolds at the Hot Lava Chicken Shack.
  • Jack Black wrote the tune with A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess. The latter is also known for the wonderfully strange Napoleon Dynamite and the luchador curiosity Nacho Libre, which also star Black.
  • With its fast-food jingle energy, Jack Black's signature rock-goblin delivery, and a massive Minecraft Movie marketing push, "Steve's Lava Chicken" quickly became a viral sensation. It was translated, remixed, mashed up, and inserted into TikToks, Twitch streams, and probably at least one PowerPoint presentation.
  • When the 34-second "Steve's Lava Chicken" entered the UK Singles Chart in April 2025, it became the shortest song ever to do so, narrowly pecking past Jonny Trunk and Wisbey's 36-second 2007 hit "The Ladies' Bras."

Steve's Lava Chicken" also became the shortest song to reach the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing the previous record held by Kid Cudi's 2020 track "Beautiful Trip," which is 37 seconds long.
  • Jack Black is no stranger to oddball musical success. With Tenacious D, his comedic rock duo with Kyle Gass, he brought us such anthems as "Wonderboy" and "POD," which sound like prog rock filtered through a particularly vivid dream. More recently, he crooned his way to solo success with "Peaches" from The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) - a heartfelt piano ballad sung in the voice of Bowser, a turtle-dragon-tyrant with emotional depth and fire breath.
