Songfacts®:

  • The title track of Singing to Strangers is a simple song inspired by a conversation between Jack Savoretti's daughter and a friend of hers. The singer told The Sun the two kids were having the "what does your dad do" chat and he overheard her saying, "I think he goes around the world singing to strangers."

At first Savoretti wanted to disagree but then he thought, Actually, she's right.
  • Savoretti elaborated in a press release:

"That's my job: I sing to strangers. That is what I've spent most of my life doing. And I think that was my way of validating my career, saying: this is how we got here. And also to anyone else out there: you want to do this? Go sing to strangers!

Doing that, of course, requires more intimacy. Singing to friends and family and fans: they're already onside, so you can, to some extent, sing anything. Strangers need convincing, touching, connection."
  • Asked by HMV.com why he decided Singing To Strangers was the right title for the album, Savoretti replied: "I decided that before I wrote a single song. It was a running theme. Then I wrote the song, it's the song that tells you what the album means. It's the central character explaining to the crowd who he is. It's putting a spotlight on the main character."
