Songfacts®:

  • This slice of laid-back R&B and soul finds Janelle Monáe celebrating the idiosyncrasies that set her apart, as she addresses persistent rumors about her sexuality as well as celebrating the joys of nonconformity.

Cause I'm crazy and I'm sexy and I'm cool
Little rough around the edges but I keep it smooth
I'm always left of center and that's right where I belong
I'm the random minor note you hear in major songs

Monae identifies as a pansexual, which encompasses an attraction towards someone regardless of their biological sex or gender identity. The Kansas born singer told Rolling Stone that she initially identified as bisexual, "but then later I read about pansexuality and was like, 'Oh, these are things that I identify with too.' I'm open to learning more about who I am."
  • The song was produced by frequent Monáe collaborators Nate Rocket and Chuck Lightning, who are part of the Wondaland Arts Society. The pair also make their own music as the two-man funk act Deep Cotton. They began to gain notoriety after their song "We're Far Enough from Heaven Now We Can Freak Out" was featured in a Sonos commercial featuring Monáe.
