  • "Vestavia Hills" is a portrayal of the strained relationship between a veteran roadie and his celebrated musician boss. The roadie, who has been by the musician's side throughout his rise to fame, has reached his breaking point, feeling exploited and underappreciated. He confronts the musician about his reckless lifestyle and announces his decision to leave the tour and return to his Vestavia Hills home.
  • Jason Isbell wrote "Vestavia Hills" for his ninth studio album, Weathervanes. He originally penned it about someone else before realizing the joke was on him. "I got about halfway through the song and I was like, 'I see what I'm doing. You a--hole,'" he told Apple Music. "Then I thought about, man, what would it be like to be an artist's crew member? Let's make our character the crew guy, the sound guy who has been doing this for a long time and really believes in the work and really cares about the artist, but he has had enough."

"Basically, this is him turning in his two-week notice and saying, 'I'm going to do one last tour with you, and then I'm going home, because my wife makes a lot of money,'" Isbell added. "We have a nice house in a nice neighborhood and I don't have to put up with this s--t anymore.'"
  • Vestavia Hills is an affluent suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. Asked by Uncut magazine to explain the significance of the setting of Vestavia Hills, lsbell replied. "It's shorthand for a fancy place. Lotta nice houses. No need to be miserable riding around in a van when you have a nice home that your wife pays for in Vestavia Hills."
