Songfacts®:

  • This is a very meta song from Jason Michael Carroll: It's a song about hanging out in a bar that was written while hanging out in a bar. Carroll's co-writer Pete Good came up with the story about an Irish guy who encounters the down-on-his-luck singer in a friendly tavern and proceeds to offer toast after toast as they enjoy a memorable evening:

Here's to a long life, and a merry one,
Here's to a quick death and an easy one,
A pretty girl and an honest one,
Here's to a cold beer... and another one

In our interview with Jason Michael Carroll, he explained: "Pete called me up one night and said he had an idea for the song. We met at the bar, and two-and-a-half hours later, we had it finished."
  • The toast/chorus of this song is exactly as Pete Good wrote it when he brought it to Carroll. Good thought it was a good starting point, but Carroll liked it exactly as it was written on Good's phone, so that's how they kept it.
