Songfacts®:

  • Jelly Roll is about to lose his darlin' gal. He's run out of options and turned to the Almighty for a little help, even though he doesn't deserve it.

I only talk to God when I need a favor
And I only pray when I ain't got a prayer.
So who the hell am I to expect a Savior?
But God I need a favor. Amen... Amen.

Y'all best believe, Jelly Roll is in a bind. He's calling out to God hoping for a little mercy, even though he's been steering clear for far too long.
  • "Need A Favor" is a prime example of Jelly Roll's honest, straight-talkin' style. Just like his breakthrough hit "Son Of A Sinner," this prayer for sinners delves into the nitty-gritty of being real and looking in the mirror when we have to face up to the fallout of our faults. Jelly Roll is all about being humble and telling it like it is.
  • Written by the singer with Joe and Rob Ragosta and the song's producer Austin Nivarel, Jelly Roll released the song as the lead single from Whitsitt Chapel on December 9, 2022.
  • Backed by a full gospel choir, Jelly Roll performed the song at the 2023 CMT Music Awards as church signs with the track's lyrics flashed behind him. Jelly Roll walked away with not one, not two, but three awards: Male Video of the Year, Breakthrough Male Video of the Year, and CMT Digital-First Performance of the Year, all for "Son Of A Sinner."
  • A week after his performance at the 2023 CMT Music Awards, "Need a Favor" entered the Hot 100 at #82.
  • When "Need a Favor" rose from #12 to #9 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart dated June 24, 2023, it was already #3 on Mainstream Rock Airplay. That made it the first song ever to reach the Top 10 of both Country Airplay and Mainstream Rock Airplay. It topped Mainstream Rock Airplay in May 2022 and crowned both Billboard's Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs charts two months later.
  • Jelly Roll opened the CMA Awards with "Need a Favor" accompanied by a gospel choir. Halfway through he was joined on stage by Wynonna Judd, who belted out the rest of the song with him.

Judd told the assembled media that she considers Jelly Roll a good friend and she was very anxious about the performance, at times clutching Jelly's arm for support. "I got out there and I was so nervous, I just held on for dear life," she stated. "That's the bottom line."

Jelly Roll also teamed with K. Michelle for the night's closing performance, singing the Judds' "Love Can Build a Bridge." His recording of that song is found on the A Tribute to the Judds album.

Jelly Roll snagged the New Artist of the Year award at the ceremony. "There is something poetic about a 39-year-old man winning new artist of the year," he said in his acceptance speech.
  • Jelly Roll won big at the 2024 CMT Awards. He went home with three trophies: Video of the Year and Male Video of the Year for "Need A Favor" and Performance of the Year for his rendition of "Need a Favor" at the 2023 CMT Awards.
