  • Appearing on the Songfacts Podcast, Dead biographer Dennis McNally confirmed that "Mission In The Rain" is about Jerry Garcia's childhood and young adulthood in his hometown of San Francisco, California. Garcia himself once suggested the same, but he didn't write the lyrics: Robert Hunter did, and Garcia wrote the music.

Hunter was rarely literal with his songwriting. Conflation of characters, poetic license, metaphor, literary allusion, and symbolism are woven into his songs. So, while there's an obvious connection, it's unlikely to be without some abstraction and embellishment.

Hunter told the Dead fanzine Dead Relix that "Mission In The Rain" was a "portrait" of his early days with the band, which harks to the lyric, "Ten years ago I walked this street." Hunter and Garcia wrote "Mission In The Rain" somewhere around 1975 or '76, so 10 years before that time would place them squarely in the early days of their collaboration.
  • A little background to the meaning of "mission" in this song: The San Francisco Mission District is named after the Mission Dolores on Dolores Street between 16th and 17th Streets. Father Junipero Serra founded the mission in 1776. The church sang its first mass five days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the other side of the nation in Philadelphia. Hunter lived at 17th and Mission during his early tenure as Dead lyricist.
  • The song isn't a celebration, as one might expect. It's a melancholy meditation on the impermanence of life and on the illusory temptations of fame.

Ten years ago, I walked this street my dreams were riding tall
Tonight I would be thankful Lord, for any dream at all.
Some folks would be happy just to have one dream come true
But everything you gather is just more that you can lose

One can imagine the young Hunter and Garcia excitedly looking ahead to careers as visionary musicians. One can just as easily imagine the older versions trapped in life's complexities, looking back and wondering if any of it meant anything at all. And so it goes.
  • The song appears on Jerry Garcia's third solo album, Reflections. He played it live a handful of times with the Grateful Dead in 1976, but most performances were with his Jerry Garcia Band.

Garcia brought in Grateful Dead members for about half the songs on Reflections, but they didn't play on "Mission In the Rain," which was entirely the Jerry Garcia Band.
  • Oteil Burbridge, who joined Mickey Hart and Bob Weir's Dead & Company after a long stint in The Allman Brothers, covered this song on his solo album Lovely View Of Heaven in 2023. He recorded the song at Floki Studios in Iceland, and in addition to his role as bass player, he also did the lead vocals, a new experience for him.

"My voice was starting to go on 'Mission In The Rain' and it actually helped the track," Oteil told Songfacts. "You can hear me having to reach for it, you know. You can't tell, but you can feel it, like I'm in prayer the whole time, like, 'Help me hit this note. Please, please let me hit it.' I think it actually helped the song."
