Songfacts®:

  • This song is about a real person Armatrading knew. He was in a relationship with a woman and would shower her with gifts, but all she wanted was for him to tell her he loved her. It never gets through to him that the flowers and phone calls aren't what she's after.

Like many of Armatrading's songs, it's a reflection on how love dictates life. The wrote the song after speaking with another friend about this guy, and coming to the conclusion that he just doesn't get it.
  • Musicians on this track:

    Phil Palmer - guitar
    Pino Palladino - bass
    Bob Noble- keyboards
    Dave Mattacks - drums
