Songfacts®:

  • Jody Watley continued her run of hits with "Some Kind Of Lover," an ode to a guy who turns her on and turns her out. She wrote the song with André Cymone, who produced it with David Z. Both of these guys were veterans of the Prince camp, and you can hear the influence.
  • This was the fourth single from Jody Watley's self-titled debut album, following "Looking For A New Love," "Still A Thrill," and "Don't You Want Me." She was on the charts for over a year and won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Watley's next album, Larger Than Life, included the hits "Real Love" and "Friends."
  • Jody Watley made a triumphant return to Soul Train when she performed "Some Kind Of Lover" on the show in 1987, making a striking entrance in a backless bustier. She was a former dancer on the show and became part of the group Shalamar, which recorded on Soul Train Records.
  • The music video was directed by Brian Grant, who put Watley's model looks and dance skill to good use. It was nominated for the MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video, and Watley performed it on the show.
