Songfacts®:

  • This is a 5-minute pop-classical 7/4 time tribute to music. It sums up how music lovers feel about music: "Music was my first love and it will be my last/the music of tomorrow, the music of the past." In the States it was edited down to just over 3 minutes, which possibly explains its low chart position.
  • John Miles wrote this in Leeds when he had some time to kill and his song writing partner at the time Bob Marshall wasn't around. He claims it only took him half an hour to write. Although he originally thought it would be the basis of other songs, he later decided that it stood up very well on its own.
  • Record World at the time described this as "Another endearing and sophisticated pop opus. An exceptionally well constructed tune, each segment is held together with lucid production polish. A triumph."
  • Alan Parsons produced this song as well as the rest of the album. In an interview with Progressive World, Alan Parsons said: "'Music' is a milestone in the history of popular music, and John Miles is one of my favorite singers, and I am honored that I have been able to put my mark onto his great music, yet you shouldn't put all of the credits in my direction alone."
