Songfacts®:

  • Written for his seventh album, Swag, "First Place" is Justin Bieber's love letter to his wife Hailey, whom he puts at the top of his podium. The song isn't all rose petals and Hallmark verses - it nods to the highs and lows of marriage, but the throughline is clear: he wants to celebrate Hailey like it's her birthday.
  • Bieber co-wrote "First Place" with Carter Lang, Dylan Wiggins, Eddie Benjamin, Tobias Jesso Jr., Jackson Morgan, Daniel Chetrit and Knox Fortune. Bieber, Lang, Wiggins, Benjamin, and Fortune handled production duties.

Knox Fortune is a Chicago-born, Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and producer who first made his name with his work on Chance the Rapper's Coloring Book track "All Night." Since then, he's worked with the likes of Joey Purp and Vic Mensa, as well as collaborating with Bieber on another Swag cut, "Dadz Love."

Lang, Wiggins, Benjamin, Jesso, Morgan and Chetrit all contributed to multiple tracks on the Swag album, helping shape its sound.
  • Directed by longtime Bieber visual collaborator Rory Kramer, the black-and-white video was filmed in Northern Iceland. There are scenic shots of the Biebs soaking in nature, snowboarding, and recording Swag at the scenic and remote Flóki Studios on the Trollaskagi Peninsula.
