Songfacts®:

  • "We Cry Together" finds Kendrick Lamar and the actress Taylour Paige portraying a toxic couple. The pair manifest their mutual frustration by exchanging vulgar insults and slanderous disses, with neither emerging victorious. It ends with Lamar and Paige having sex accompanied by tap music. The rapper's fiancée Whitney Alford then tells them to "stop tap-dancing around the conversation."
  • The intro samples Florence + the Machine's High As Hope track "June." It is a slightly altered version featuring Kamasi Washington on sax.
  • This marks Taylour Paige's first time on a song. A trained dancer, her acting roles include Ahsha Hayes in the VH1 series Hit the Floor, and the title character in the 2020 movie Zola. She won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead for the latter.
  • The Alchemist produced the track with additional production by Bekon and J.LBS. East Coast beatmaker The Alchemist previously supplied instrumentation for Lamar's 2017 single "The Heart Part 4" and the Damn track "FEAR."
