Songfacts®:

  • Kenny Chesney wrote "Beer in Mexico" while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, attending Sammy Hagar's birthday party. It's a song about facing a crossroads in life and not knowing what decisions to make. He decides to put his musings on hold and enjoy the sun going down with a beer in hand.
  • Chesney wrote in his 2025 memoir Heart Life Music: "Written at Sammy Hagar's pool, after playing what I'm told is still the longest set in the history of Sammy's birthday parties. Sweaty, played out and thrilled to be part of something like this, I took note that Sammy turning 57 wasn't slowing down any! That's part of what sparked the song: all the expectations do [x] or y, or what; but who said so?"

It's a theme that has echoed through Chesney's catalog, from "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems" to the wistful ease of "When the Sun Goes Down."
  • Chesney recorded the song for his 10th album, The Road and the Radio. Co-produced by Chesney with his regular production partner Buddy Cannon, it was released on November 8, 2005, and debuted at #1, Chesney's fourth album to achieve that feat.
  • "Beer in Mexico" debuted at #60 on the Country chart in November 2005 as an album cut. Released as the album's fifth single in January 2007, it topped the tally, marking a significant milestone in Chesney's career as the first single solely written by him to reach #1 on the Country chart.
  • Chesney told CBS Sunday Morning that songwriting for him is "a lot like fishing." Some days he catches a lot, some days he sits all day frustrated. Many writers make it look easy, but for him "it's a grind I really truly love."

"Beer in Mexico," he said, was one of the lucky ones, a song that came easy, a cold one pulled from the cooler of inspiration rather than wrestled from the deep.
