  • "Light Up" is a euphoric, stadium-sized pop anthem about love, resilience, and human potential. Kylie Minogue wrote the song specifically for her 2026 Netflix documentary Kylie, a three-part series that combines archival footage and new interviews to chart her remarkable career, personal struggles and enduring place in popular culture.
  • At its heart, "Light Up" is about the transformative power of being truly seen by someone who loves you. Kylie was inspired by the way a parent can see possibilities in their child before their child can see it.

"The song is about that love that your parent, or someone who cares for you, can give you when you're lost, confused, lonely, distressed," she explained during a Q&A at Spotify's Listening Lounge in London. "Someone who loves you can look into your eyes and see a world of potential."
  • Kylie was thinking specifically about her mother, Carol Ann Jones (née Minogue), while writing the song. "You can see in this documentary - don't make me cry - I love her so much. I was writing about when you're struggling, whether you're a child or a grown-up, and someone who loves you will look into your eyes and, like a manga cartoon, you kind of zoom in and you see this world of possibility," she told The Los Angeles Times. "When you're lost, helpless or glassy-eyed, someone who can see in you what you can't see can light you up, and you can get through that moment."

For Kylie, that idea extends far beyond parental love. She explained that family, friendships, and romantic relationships can all tap into that same source of strength. Reflecting on the profound connections the singer shared with the likes of Michael Hutchence and Nick Cave, she noted how the support of loved ones can help someone navigate self-doubt or life's inevitable setbacks. "You can get through health issues," Kylie told The Los Angeles Times. "You can get out on stage and do that thing that you're supposed to do when everything feels like you couldn't do it, so it's like parental love, friendship love, can spread to audience love. Because they will give you the strength to go out and have those moments to share. It's a beautiful thing."
  • Kylie Minogue wrote "Light Up" with Richard "Biff" Stannard, Duck Blackwell, Luke Fitton and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. "The first phrase of the song came to me as I was thinking about how magical it is when someone who truly loves you can see a world of possibility in you and recognize your potential, even when you're feeling lost or hurt," said Kylie. "I shared the seed of the idea with Chris Martin over the phone, and ten minutes later he sent me a voice note with some chord and melody ideas for those few lines."

Richard "Biff" Stannard is a Brighton-born songwriter and producer whose career breakthrough came working with East 17 in the early 1990s. He went on to be a key architect of the Spice Girls' sound, co-writing and producing global hits including "Wannabe," "Viva Forever" and "2 Become 1." His songwriting partnership with Kylie spans over two decades, producing hits including "Love At First Sight" and "Please Stay," as well as contributing 10 songs to her 2023 album Tension. Most recently, their collaboration "XMAS" became the UK Christmas #1 in 2025.

Duck Blackwell (born Mark Blackwell, Kingston, Jamaica) is a London-based writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist working primarily in pop and dance genres. He has collaborated with the likes of James Arthur and Teddy Swims and began working with Kylie on her 2020 album Disco.

Luke Fitton is Kylie's touring guitarist.
  • "Light Up" appears in the documentary's final episode, where its message of hope, perseverance and unconditional support mirrors the emotional journey of the series. As Kylie told the Los Angeles Times, "There's a new song called 'Light Up' that lives perfectly within the documentary. It's not a 'Padam,' but it's got a lot of heart."
