Songfacts®:

  • Larry Coryell's debut album was recorded in 1968, the same year he married his first wife, Julie Nathanson. Running to around six and a half minutes, the eponymous, instrumental title track is named after and inspired by her.

Julie was more than just an inspiration on Larry's second album: she co-wrote the tracks "Ah Wuv Ooh" and "No One Really Knows," and also appeared on the cover. In 1975, she became his manager. >>>

  • The album was released in 1969, the year Coryell turned 26. By that time, he had done time in Chico Hamilton's band and made the cover of Downbeat. Originally a blues guitarist, he moved to jazz and became known for incorporating rock and other styles into his compositions; the Lady Coryell album is one of his more experimental. "It came at a time when I didn't know where I wanted to go," he said. Coryell also played with Miles Davis and Herbie Mann.
