Songfacts®:

  • Laufey Lín Jónsdóttir is an Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She was born in Reykjavík, Iceland to an Icelandic father and Chinese mother.

At just 15, she was a cello soloist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. That same year, Laufey wowed the audience on Ísland Got Talent, Iceland's version of America's Got Talent, and made it all the way to the finals.

Laufey took her talents across the pond and landed at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in the US. She honed her skills there and proudly graduated in 2021.

The following year, she dropped her debut studio album, Everything I Know About Love, released on the AWAL label.

Laufey unleashed the single "From The Start" on May 11, 2023.
  • Laufey teamed up with her fellow Berklee College of Music alumnus Spencer Stewart (Olivia O'Brien's "Josslyn," Alina Baraz's "To Me") to create "From The Start." The jazz-pop gem will have you tapping your toes with its breezy bossa nova vibes. And the lyrics? They hit you right in the feels, as Laufey explores the world of unrequited love.
  • Laufey is in love with a man who only sees her as a friend. She is stuck in the friend zone and feels awkward and silent when she is alone with him. She can't escape hearing about his girlfriend, which only adds to her misery.

Despite her pain, Laufey can't help but wonder if there's something more between them. She questions her sanity, thinking she might be crazy to believe in a connection. But she knows she has to tell him how she feels, even if it's terrifying.

Lying in bed, Laufey makes up her mind to spill her guts and confess her love. It's better than holding it all inside, even if it's a terrifying prospect. Through it all, she keeps up a cheerful facade, showing that she'll be OK no matter what happens.

    Unrequited, terrifying
Love is driving me a bit insane
Have to get this off my chest

Love's got her feeling unrequited and a little bit insane. It's time to let it out and tell him how she feels, no matter the outcome. Today's the day.
  • Upon release, the song quickly went viral on TikTok, with people using it to create videos about their own experiences with unrequited love.
  • "From The Start" is the lead single from Laufey's second album, Bewitched. Released on September 8, 2023, Bewitched broke the record for the biggest first day for a jazz album on Spotify, with 5.7 million streams. It debuted at the end of the week at #23 on the Billboard 200, marking Laufey's first appearance on the chart.
  • "From the Start" blew up on TikTok in August 2025 due to a a chilled-out dance remix created by Jiandro and ola.wav. The remix, built around the catchy lyric loop "run to me, confess your love, at least just let me say," was first shared as a sound clip in mid-July 2025. TikTok creator Temi initiated a dance challenge on August 2, 2025 that went viral, inspiring hundreds of thousands of user-generated videos.
