Songfacts®:

  • You can tell this one is a Lenny Kravitz song just from the opening line:

I've got this feeling that we were together
    Before this human form

Kravitz is very spiritual, and his songs often explore love on a cosmic level. In this song, he's stuck in the middle between his heart and his soul. You can't love much deeper than that.
  • Kravitz, like Prince, can be a one-man band when he wants to, and that's what he did on this song, playing all the instruments himself and also handling all the vocals. There's a sitar and a Hammond B3 organ in the mix, along with guitar, bass, and a drum machine he programmed.

"It all came together when I picked up the bass," he told Billboard. "I didn't anticipate the baseline being as funky as it was on top of that sweet ballad. The bass had this sort of late '70s, early '80s Motown feel, like something that might be on a Diana Ross record."
  • Kravitz wanted a gospel choir on this song, but that wasn't possible because he recorded it in his Bahamas studio during the pandemic. So, he created one himself by layering his own vocals over and over until he got the sound he was after.
  • "Stuck In The Middle" is part of Kravitz album Blue Electric Light, released in 2024, six years after his previous album, Raise Vibration. When he did a media tour to promote it, it was clear that Lenny was living his best life. The album was well-received, he was in incredible shape, and he was tightly bonded with his actress daughter Zoe Kravitz.
