Songfacts®:

  • Over a shiny guitar line, Lil Nas X spits bars about working on his body so he can get down with his love interest. A "scoop" is a news item of exceptional importance or interest, and the rapper wants to create that level of excitement for his crush.
  • Doja Cat joins Lil Nas on the track. She too has been getting into shape for her lover:

And now my body look like something you'd eat cake off
  • Lil Nas originally earmarked Ski Mask The Slump God to feature, but the track had to be turned in before he could finish his verse.
  • Take A Daytrip are listed as executive producers on Montero. The New York production duo previously helped with Lil Nas X's 7 EP, and also have credits on hit songs by the likes of Sheck Wes ("Mo Bamba"), Juice WRLD ("Legends") and Travis Scott and Kid Cudi ("The Scotts").
  • Take A Daytrip's David Biral told Billboard the song originated when he was in the studio messing around on the keyboard. Something he played for a split second grabbed Nas' attention and he said, "Go back to that one thing you played."

None of them could figure out what had so interested him, but fortunately, their photographer and videographer, David Dickinson, recorded the moment. They looked back at his video, and that split second of keys became the main lead line for "Scoop."
