• "Hey There Sunshine" is a song about coming through a long, dark emotional period and reaching the moment when the clouds finally begin to part. Whether that darkness stems from depression, illness, grief, or hardship, the track finds hope in the simple act of keeping going until healing feels possible again.
  
  "The world needs 'Hey There Sunshine,'" Karen Fairchild of LBT said on the Off The Record podcast. "And in what feels like very divisive times, we felt like that was an important thing to say, to give people that push to get up and live their life again when they've been in a dark spot. I think that has always been something that we're passionate about as a band: giving someone that nudge to get up and dream your dreams, live your life."
  
  "We did get so many sweet comments," she added. "A friend said that his mom had lost her husband and then fallen in love again, and then he passed away, just in a dark spot. And he sent her that song, and he said, 'This is your sign, Mom. You have to get outside and live.'"
• Songwriters Hillary Lindsey, Jon Nite and Gordie Sampson wrote the track. It first reached Little Big Town's Jimi Westbrook through Cary Barlowe - Lindsey's husband - sometime around 2022 or 2023.
  
  "He played it for me when we came in from hunting one day," Westbrook recalled to Billboard. "I was floored, and it's one of those where you're inside going, 'How do I get this song?'"
  
  When Westbrook followed up, he learned the track was already being pitched around Nashville to other artists. Little Big Town had to let it go for the time being, a frustrating moment for a band that knew they had just heard something special.
• After Westbrook played the demo for the rest of the group, Karen Fairchild reached out to Lindsey directly. "You deserve Adele or Miley or Pink to cut the song," Fairchild told her. "If it doesn't happen, we would love to have it." Fairchild noted that was just the nature of their friendship, adding that "songs find their way to the people they're supposed to be with sometimes."
  
  For Westbrook, the connection to the track was simple: "That song is why you make music."
• Released on May 15, 2026 as the lead single for their album It's a Dying Art, "Hey There Sunshine" was Little Big Town's first new original music in two years, following their 2024 holiday project The Christmas Record and 2022 album Mr. Sun.
  
  The group chose "Hey There Sunshine" as the album's opening statement because of its core message: sometimes there's a reason to take one more step and live one more day.
  
  "It felt very important living in a very divided time and culture with not a lot of peace, it seems," Fairchild said.
• The track was co-produced by Fairchild and Gena Johnson, whose producer and engineering credits include work with Jason Isbell, Dolly Parton, and Brandi Carlile. The pair first met while working on a Shelby Lynne album, and their first collaboration with Little Big Town was the track "The Innkeeper" for The Christmas Record.
  
  The group instantly clicked with Johnson's collaborative studio style. "We just hit it off, and she's so encouraging, and such a great spirit," Westbrook said.
  
  Johnson and Fairchild ended up co-producing the entire It's a Dying Art album together.
• Little Big Town gave "Hey There Sunshine" its live television debut at the 2026 Academy of Country Music Awards on May 17, 2026, performing at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
• Becky Fluke and Reid Long, a directing duo known for their work with Eric Church, Brothers Osborne and The Black Keys directed the song's music video.
• Like most musicians and songwriters, Little Big Town are concerned about what the rise of AI will mean for the music industry. But they hope the cold artificiality of AI-generated music will make people embrace imperfection in human artistry, which is why they made a rough-around-the-edges album.
  
  "Those qualities, those things about humanity are what actually I think attracts us to things. It's the ragged edges. That's the character," Westbrook told Off The Record. "And I think people are being more inspired in that direction to come back to authentic and real."
