Songfacts®:

  • Featuring Jimi Westbrook on lead vocals, "Rich Man" is a tender ode to the important things in life. Accompanied by fellow Little Big Town members Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman and Phillip Sweet's harmonies, Westbrook counts his blessings. The love he receives from his family makes him rich enough, so the singer doesn't wish for financial wealth as well. God has given Westbrook all he needs.
  • Jimi Westbrook began toying with the idea of the song in the early 2010s. As time passed and life happened, the concept of what genuine riches are grew stronger. "'Rich Man' has a special place in my heart, and it feels like the most honest me song I've ever written," said Westbrook. "It is about my love of family and their role in laying the foundation that anchors me."
  • After continually adding to "Rich Man" for over decade, Westbrook completed the stripped-back ballad in time to record it for Little Big Town's Mr. Sun album. The song fits perfectly with the record's anchoring themes. "Mr. Sun is focused on better days ahead, the value of friendships and family," said Phillip Sweet. "It touches on heartbreak and letting go, but it's full of sunshine and joy."
  • This is the first time Little Big Town cut a song penned by a sole member of the band. The only other instance of the group recording a song by a solo songwriter, was 2016's "Better Man," which Taylor Swift penned specifically for the band.
  • Produced and filmed by Running Bear Films in Nashville, the nostalgic video tells the story of a young boy and his relationship with his father over a period of time. Charles Esten (Outer Banks, Nashville) plays the father and Jim Westbrook portrays the older grown-up version of the little boy.
