  • Mothers will warn their daughters that boys only want one thing. Well, in this song Lola Young is offering to give him that one thing.

The song, though, is more than just an ode to bedroom gymnastics. Young said the track is "about sex. Full stop," but she also emphasized that "sex is never just about sex," pointing to the emotional complexity that often underlies physical intimacy.
  • Young co-wrote "One Thing" with her bandmates: guitarist Conor Dickinson and keyboardist William "Manuka" Brown. Brown also handled production along with Solomonophonic (who's worked with Remi Wolf) and Carter Lang (who has SZA and Doja Cat on his résumé). The same team penned her breakthrough single, "Messy."
  • Dave Meyers (SZA, Sabrina Carpenter) directed the music video. Through a series of provocative and symbolic scenes, the video challenges traditional stereotypes and presents a narrative of liberation and self-assuredness.

Young wanted to create a song and music video that are "thought-provoking and highlight sex being both a fun and light thing, not always meaningful," while also challenging and reversing traditional gender roles.
  • Young's first live performance of "One Thing" came at Coachella on April 11, 2025, which is a very Coachella thing to do: debut a sexually frank feminist bop in the middle of a desert.
  • On "One Thing," Lola Young flips the script, treating a man like her plaything, though with a breezy, tongue-in-cheek charm. "If a man can say, 'I'm only here for one thing,' then so can I," she told The Guardian.

For Young, the song isn't just swagger; it's about exploring her own sexuality, embracing the thrill of feeling powerful and sexy.
