Songfacts®:

  • In this track, LP says goodbye to wasting time and to the darkness where there should be light. "A lot of my songs are often me telling myself not to worry so much," she told Songfacts. "It's my kind of therapy. I just felt like there were a lot of things that I didn't need anymore, whether it was in my mind, or lying next to me! [Laughs] I was just trying to do some 'spring cleaning' in my life."
  • At the end of the song, LP says goodbye in different languages:

    Spanish: Adiós
    French: Au revoir
    Italian: Arrivederci
    Greek: Yassou
    Russian: Dosvedanya
    Yoruba: Odabo
  • LP wrote this song with Nate Campany and Mike Del Rio. The trio go way back; they worked together on LP's 2014 major-label debut album and also on her breakout hit, "Lost on You." It was the fourth single from her album Churches.
  • The video picks up the story from LP's previous single, "One Last Time." In that one, she gets abducted by two goons who throw her in the back seat of a car and drive away. In "Goodbye," she ends up on a sailboat drinking champagne with some beautiful people - quite a scene change. She explained: "The video for 'Goodbye' feels like that time period after you make a big decision when you don't know where life is going but you feel hopeful and maybe a little scared and thrilled at the same time. Being on a boat with friends was a moment of new perspectives and clarity for me. I hope this song and this video are a breath of fresh air for anyone feeling like they need to clear their head and embark on a new journey."

Both videos were directed by Stephen Schofield.
