Songfacts®:

  • Luke Bryan and Luke Combs team up on this bar-room breakup song. Instead of wallowing, the two Lukes speak to a freshly dumped friend, encouraging him to drown his sorrows and focus on the perks of bachelorhood. The title puts a country spin on the classic playground rhyme "finders keepers, losers weepers," swapping out the losers for "drinkers."
  • Beau Bailey, Jimi Bell, and Sam Ellis wrote "Finders Keepers." Bryan first heard their demo while working in the studio when his manager played it for him. He said it "hit me like a ton of bricks," and he cut it on the fly the same day for his Signs album.

The track is the first Luke Bryan placement for writers Bailey and Ellis, while Bell also co-wrote another Signs track, "I Liked Loving You."
  • Though Bryan had been hunting for a "Luke & Luke moment" with Combs for a while, he hadn't originally planned on adding a duet to Signs. After tracking his own vocals, Bryan texted Combs to see if he'd be interested; Combs immediately replied, "I'm in." The songwriters didn't even know Combs had joined the track until Bryan played them the finished duet.
  • The "finders keepers" nursery rhyme has inspired plenty of other pop and rap hits over the years:

Taio Cruz used it on his 2009 breakout single "Break Your Heart," singing, "Then it's finders keepers and losers weepers."

Kelly Rowland included the line "Make you lose yourself, and finders keepers" on her 2011 hit "Motivation."

Panic! At The Disco chanted "Finders keepers, losers weepers" on their 2015 track "Emperor's New Clothes."

Mabel took it a step further with her 2017 single "Finders Keepers," turning the line into both the title and the core of the hook.
