"Heart To Heart" is a poignant tribute to Mac DeMarco's friend, Mac Miller, who died of an accidental drug overdose aged 26 on September 7, 2018. What began as a faux beef over the similarities of their names grew into a genuine friendship.
The pair were very close in the year leading up to Miller's sudden death. "We had this strange history, and then we became really close, and I was going over to his place multiple times a week, up until the point that he passed away," DeMarco told Entertainment Weekly.
It appears that the bond between DeMarco and Miller was founded on their willingness to be open and honest with each other. Miller valued the close connection they shared, as evidenced by the repetition of the phrase "heart to heart" in the chorus.
Mac DeMarco included "Heart to Heart" on his 2019 album Here Comes The Cowboy. In January 2023, the song went viral on TikTok when numerous users used it as a soundtrack for their videos. This led to the song charting on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in DeMarco's career.
