This song from the film Desperately Seeking Susan was Madonna's first UK #1 hit. It was never released as a single in the US, however, where it remains one of the best-known B-sides of the '80s, since radio stations played the song anyway. In America, it was issued as the B-side of "Angel," which many folks bought to get "Into The Groove." As a result, "Angel" went to #5 in the US despite a lackluster reception.
This song about the sheer exhilaration of dance merged the underground dance scene into pop. It was voted Song Of The 1980s by Billboard readers.
Madonna and Stephen Bray wrote this song. According to the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Bray was having trouble with the bridge when Madonna walked into the studio, stepped up to the microphone and sang, "live out your fantasy here with me."
Madonna admitted to Rolling Stone that she is "not a good judge of what things are going to be huge or not." She added that with this song she felt "retarded" singing it, "but everybody seems to like it."
To celebrate the UK singles chart's 60th birthday in November 2012, the Official Charts Company provided a list of the ten top selling female acts in British chart history. Madonna came top of the list with sales of 17.8 million with "Into The Groove," being her best selling single.
On August 17, 1985, this hit the top spot in the UK, with a re-released "Holiday" at #2. This made Madonna just the fourth artist to hold the top two spots on the chart simultaneously. The only others to do it were The Beatles, John Lennon, and Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
Gymskin is an England-born fitness influencer with a large online following. In late February 2026, he posted a viral dance video set to "Into The Groove," which sparked a wave of interest in the 1985 classic and drove a significant surge in streams across platforms like Spotify and TikTok. As a result, the song re-entered the UK Official Singles Chart at #40 for the week of March 6, 2026; its first appearance in the Top 40 since its original chart run in 1985.

Daniel from Sunny Isles Beach, FlThis song shows that behind all that nonsense and bluster there actually is some talent lurking in Madonna. Wish the same could be said of more contemporary artists, cough, (Miley Cyrus. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga) cough.
