  • Maren Morris entered the culture wars with an August 26, 2022 Tweet flaming Jason Aldean's wife Brittany over an Instagram post she made a few days earlier that read: "I'd really like to thank my parents for not changing my gender when I went through my tomboy phase. I love this girly life."

Morris' Twitter retort was: "It's so easy to, like, not be a scumbag human? Sell your clip-ins and zip it, Insurrection Barbie."

Tucker Carlson of Fox News amplified the feud when he had Brittany on his September 1 show and called Morris a "lunatic" and "some kind of fake country singer."

Both sold T-shirts in the aftermath, with Aldean's saying "Don't Tread On Our Kids" and Morris' reading "Lunatic Country Music Person." Morris' shirts raised money for GLAAD to support transgender rights.

Morris' response was to distance herself from the country music establishment, which she declares in this song. "The more I hang around here, the less I give a damn," she sings.
  • Morris released this song along with "The Tree" on a two-song EP called The Bridge. The songs are related, with Morris using a burning tree as a metaphor for the country music scene in "The Tree."

She told the Los Angeles Times the songs are "the aftermath of walking away from something that was really important to you and the betrayal that you felt very righteously."

There is a light at the end of the tunnel though. "There's a thread of hope as you get to the other side," she added. "I hope it comes across that way because I truly was in a space of hope when I wrote the two songs, even though 'Get the Hell Out of Here' is really heavy. It's about disarming that trauma and saying, 'I can't bail water out of this sinking ship anymore. It's so futile. I choose happiness.'"
  • Morris wrote this song and "The Tree" with two of her favorite songwriting partners, Jimmy Robbins and Laura Veltz. Some of Morris' other songs she wrote with them include "The Bones" and "Background Music."
  • Jack Antonoff, one of Taylor Swift's favorite collaborators, produced this song. They were working on Morris' next album when they released this song on The Bridge.
  • The music video is a sequel to "The Tree." Both take place in a miniature model village where Morris is the only person around. It's clearly dying, with all the stores abandoned. In "The Tree," Morris wanders the town before leaving as a tree in the center of town burns down. "Get The Hell Out Of Here" shows the ashes settling as Morris looks on. Both videos were directed by Jason Lester.
  • Morris explained the line, "I fed all my good intentions while I starved myself" to the LA Times: "Something I've learned this year is that you don't have to be perceived to exist. I've been reading a lot of bell hooks and literature about removing yourself from ego, and I'm finding joys that have nothing to do with music."
  • In the summer of 2023, Jason Aldean had a #1 hit with "Try That In a Small Town," which some politicians and pundits condemned as hateful and racist. "Get The Hell Out Of Here" was written months earlier, but the music video takes a swipe at that song, with a billboard that reads, "Welcome To Our Perfect Small Town."
