One Assassination Under God

Album: One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1 (2024)

Songfacts®:

  • The song title is a play on the phrase "one nation under God," which is part of the US pledge of allegiance:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag
Of the United States of America
And to the Republic for which it stands
    One nation under God
Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all

In the twisted world of Marilyn Manson, this becomes "One Assassination Under God," a look at our primal impulses and voyeuristic tendencies. After all, humans are the only creatures who assassinate each other. Manson warns that this story won't end well, but "you will always be entertained."
  • The song is part of the album One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1. Both the album and video were released on the same day: November 22, 2024, the 61st anniversary of the John F. Kennedy assassination.
  • Marilyn Manson wrote and produced the song with Tyler Bates, a film composer who became a big part of the band when he joined for their 2015 album The Pale Emperor. Bates has composed music for many blockbuster films, including Guardians Of The Galaxy, Deadpool 2, and the John Wick movies. But he's also a big fan of dark metal; he's also made music with Rob Zombie and scored some of his films. His collaboration with Manson worked out very well: Bates creates soundscapes around Manson's lyrics in much the same way he scores film scenes. Bates also plays various instruments on the songs he works on with Manson, and has toured with the band as a guitarist.
  • The One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1 album marked Marilyn Manson's return after a string of allegations against him starting in 2021 when various women accused him of sexual abuse. When the first single from the album, "As Sick As The Secrets Within," was released in August 2024, it was his first new music since 2020. Manson maintained his innocence, and in early 2025 was vindicated when the prosecutor declined to press charges against him.
