Songfacts®:

  • Crenshaw wrote the music for the track after coming home from touring with a Top 40 country band and itching for some rock 'n roll. He was further inspired by the energy of legendary big band drummer Gene Krupa. "I was listening to a CD of Benny Goodman concert [from 1938] at Carnegie Hall. And at the beginning of one song, Gene Krupa is just keeping time on his bass drum or his hi-hat…and then by the end of the tune, he's really bangin' it out," he explained in an interview with Musoscribe.
  • Lyrically, the song arose from the financial crisis in the US in 2008 within "the throes of, let's say, the last eight years politically, you know? So there's a lot of angst in there over things that bothered me, things that were going on in the world." The lyrics take aim at then-president George W. Bush:

Well, I know a man who can’t own up to the things he's done
He’s got no sense of honor and never did have one
Where would he be without a wall to hide behind
I'm glad I'm not the one living in his mind
