Songfacts®:

  • Megan Thee Stallion has long been calling herself a "Hot Girl," having cut a 2018 song of the same name. The following year, she coined the variant "hot girl summer" to tie in with the season. The phrase, a call to live your life in a confident and unapologetic way, went viral on social media and subsequently became a meme.

Meanwhile, the track "Cash S---," in which the Texan rapper refers to herself as "thee hot girl," was rising up the charts. On July 17, 2019, Megan took to Twitter to clarify what being a Hot Girl is about:

Being a Hot Girl is about being unapologetically YOU, having fun, being confident, living YOUR truth , being the life of the party etc.

The next logical step was to record an official anthem for living the best life, so Megan tweeted on July 18, 2019:

I feel like it's only right I drop a hot girl summer song before the summer is over

The explosive track was released on August 9, 2019.
  • Megan enlisted the self-professed rap queen Nicki Minaj for a fierce verse. Both ladies drop explicit, quick bars in which they warn prospective male suitors they won't be tamed. Ty Dolla $ign also lends his buttery vocals, contributing a smooth hook in which he gives props to the hot girls.
  • Minaj's addition to the song came together at the very last minute. "Hot Girl Summer" was already recorded and ready to go when Megan hooked up with the Queens MC in late July on a Instagram Live Session. Minaj then recorded her verse that night.
  • Bone Collector, Juicy J and Crazy Mike's production is built around a sample of City Girls' "Act Up."
  • The Munachi Osegbu-directed video begins with comedian Jaimesha Thomas. We see her down in the dumps until she gets a text with an invite to "the hottest pool party of the summer." Her spirits lifted, she heads off to the neon-colored pool party, which is thrown by Megan Thee Stallion with help from Nicki Minaj, Ty Dolla $ign, and co-producer Juicy J.

The guests include French Montana, Ari Lennox, Dani Leigh, Dreezy, Summer Walker and Rico Nasty, while Lala Anthony also features in the role of a news reporter.
  • Megan performed this at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, where it won for Best Power Anthem.
