Songfacts®:

  • "Rhyme Dust" is a collaboration between American house music legend Marc "MK" Kinchen and Australian producer and DJ Dom Dolla. The slice of tech house samples Q-Tip's "Breathe and Stop" from his 1999 album Amplified.
  • The two producers had crossed over at shows and festivals several times and talked about working on a track together. They eventually made a date for Dom Dolla to come over to MK's studio in March 2020. As fate would have it, their appointment coincided with the start of the pandemic. While the two were honing in on the Q-Tip track as their source of inspiration, Dom received a call that he needed to return to Australia right away because the borders were closing. The two carried on working on the track, playing it out live and making changes along the way.
  • Q-Tip is one of Dom Dolla's favorite rappers, and he'd been thinking about using the vocal from "Breathe & Stop" for a while. "Marc and I explored plenty of different ways of using the vocal – stretching, warping it etc," he told Beatportal. "It was important to both of us to respect the authenticity of the vocal, but still shape it for the dance floor."
  • MK and Dom Della started to include "Rhyme Dust" in their sets over the summer of 2022, getting an enthusiastic reaction from the crowds. When Della shared a snippet of the track from his Selected Session in November on TikTok, it quickly gained traction and went viral, generating a massive demand for the release of the record. However, this happened during the Christmas season when the labels were closed and the artists were on tour.

As soon as music business resumed, MK and Dom reorganized their release schedules and worked on clearing Q-Tip's "Breathe & Stop." Once they'd cleared it, the two released the song on February 24, 2023.
