Songfacts®:

  • Sometimes it feels like people are deliberately trying to hurt us (and at time they actually are). "Happy?" captures that feeling as Mudvayne frontman Chad Gray sings about being beaten down over and over again, asking his tormentor if causing such suffering makes them happy.
  • "Happy?" was the theme song for the WWW Vengeance 2005 event that saw Dave Batista retain his heavyweight title after hitting Triple H with a spinebuster, a Batista Bomb, and a literal sledgehammer.
  • The "Happy?" music video sees Mudvayne performing in a field among bright flowers just before a tornado blows in. Fortunately, they survive the catastrophe. The band put together a "making of" montage to show how they made it.
  • In an interview with Metal Underground, Mudvayne drummer Matthew McDonough said that the "Happy?" video came about as he and Gray were working on the artwork for their website and for the Lost and Found album cover while talking to video director Lex Halaby, who's known for the classic of avant-garde cinema that is Snakes on a Plane (2006).
  • Mudvayne frequently perform the song live, often to close a show. Gray introduces the song by asking the crowd some variation of "are you happy?" or "how are you feeling?"
  • MTV's Headbangers Ball named "Happy?" the #1 video of 2005.
  • In July 2012, Harmonix made "Happy?" available for playable download on the Rock Band 3 video game.
  • "Happy?" was the second single released from Mudvayne's third album, Lost and Found. The album met mixed reviews with critics but was a hit with the public, selling 100,000 copies in its first week and eventually reaching Gold status. It remains the best-selling Mudvayne album.
  • The song sold very well in New Zealand, where it was certified Gold on July 28, 2022.
  • On May 20, 2005, Mudvayne performed "Happy?" on the Conan O’Brien show.
