Songfacts®:

  • The French part of this title is borrowed from an aria from Camille Saint-Saëns opera Samson and Deliah. It translates into English as "Softly Awakes My Heart." Frontman Matt Bellamy sings at the end of the song in French a montage of the aria's last two lines.
  • Italian musician Enrico Gabrielli plays the bass clarinet solo on this romantic track.
  • In an interview with Scotland on Sunday it was suggested that this pop song functions almost as an antidote to the rest of the album. Bellamy agreed saying: "Yeah, that's got a much more light feel to it. I've never really been a fan of The Beatles so much, but I'd say that on that song you can definitely hear bits of Sgt Pepper, or of Pet Sounds. (We wanted] some of that Sixties, anything-goes approach to music. When we put the bass clarinet solo down, it sounded like the theme tune to some Children's BBC cartoon. We all quite enjoyed it."
  • Muse refashioned this baroque number for the soundtrack of the romantic fantasy film New Moon at director Chris Weitz's behest. Drummer Dominic Howard told MTV News: "I know the director [Chris Weitz] really, really liked that track. He really wanted to get it into a scene somewhere, but they wanted a slightly different vibe of what was already recorded for the album."
Howard added that he's quite pleased with the refashioned version: "It's a bit more rock in some ways," he said. "We rocked it up a bit and put some guitars on it and did an alternative mix."
  • Muse are one of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's favorite bands and are the only act to have a song placed on the soundtrack of both the first two Twilight movies. Howard told MTV News: "It might be something to do with Stephenie Meyer and that she loves us. We met her quite awhile ago in Phoenix - it was before Twilight came out. She's a very nice lady and talked about how she listens to our music as she writes her books. This is all way before it turned into this huge success that it is, before everyone went vampire nuts."
