  • Looking through this clear vinyl window
At the city and its lights
    As people are walking everywhere
    It's humanity in my sights

"Song Of The Seasons" is Young looking out at the world through the window of a country house and appreciating the simple beauty of it all. The lyrics may seem mundane if not for the fact that the song was recorded and released during the COVID19 pandemic when people all over the world yearned for real-life companionship.

A soft optimism glows through the song as Young watches the seasons turn. There's no particularly hopeful sign or sentiment given other than the persistence of change itself. The song is a gentle reminder that even pandemics, in time, will pass.
  • Nils Lofgren, known for his work with Bruce Springsteen, plays guitar and accordion on this song.
  • Young released "Song Of The Seasons" on October 15, 2021, two months before the release of Barn, his 41st studio album. The first Barn song released to fans, he initially made it available only to subscribers of his Neil Young Archives.
  • This is the oldest song on the album Barn. Young recorded it on June 21st, 2021, in Le Mobile Recording Studio.
