Songfacts®:

  • This gentle piano ballad was released in April 2020, after most of the world had settled into coronavirus lockdown. The upheaval left many of us anxious and disoriented, trying to keep it together in a new world of social distancing and virtual interactions.

The song appears as a bonus track on Jones' album Pick Me Up Off The Floor, but she released it ahead of the album because it kept running through her head. "It's very much how I feel in this moment, so it felt appropriate to release it," she said. "Maybe it's how others feel as well."
  • Jones wrote and produced this song with Thomas Bartlett, who records as Doveman. After releasing her 2016 album Day Breaks, Jones broke the album-tour cycle by recording individual songs with different collaborators, like Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. Seven of these tracks were released on her 2019 collection Begin Again, including two she worked on with Bartlett: "My Heart Is Full" and "Uh Oh." Many of the other songs she recorded, including "Tryin' To Keep It Together," ended up on her Pick Me Up Off The Floor album.
