Songfacts®:

  • Here, Olivia Rodrigo sings of a flawed relationship from the past where her boyfriend didn't reciprocate the extra effort she put in.

Tried so hard to be everything that you liked
Just for you to say you're not the compliment type

She changed to make herself more attractive to him, but the boy left Rodrigo for "someone more exciting." The songstress consoles herself that one day romantic justice will prevail and he will be the heartbroken one.

Someday, I'll be everything to somebody else
And they'll think that I am so exciting
Then you'll be the one who's crying
  • This is one of two Sour tracks written solo by Olivia Rodrigo, the other being "Happier." She explained in a video that she penned the folky song on her bedroom floor while recovering from a real broken heart.

"I was literally scrolling through TikTok and I found this really hopeful breakup video," she said. "It's so embarrassing that this inspired this really emotional song, but I really was very inspired by this TikTok."
  • During an AP psychology class in high school, Rodrigo's teacher said that people are at their most creative when they're doing a menial task and letting their mind wander, because half of the brain is occupied with something, leaving the other half free to roam. Rodrigo told Apple Music she comes up with some of her best ideas when she's doing mundane activities such as driving or taking exercise. She wrote the first verse and some of the chorus of this song during a walk around her neighborhood.
  • Producer Dan Nigro plays an acoustic guitar to accompany Rodrigo's story of never being able to enough for a lover.
