Songfacts®:

  • In "Runaway," OneRepublic's frontman, Ryan Tedder, delves into the burning desire to break free from the suffocating grip of life's demands and start anew. It's a quest for liberation, tinged with the recognition of inner hurdles and uncertainties that may arise on this journey.

Can we just let go and run away?
Right now, let's just run away
All that talk is killing me
One last shot, hold onto me

Tedder yearns to escape hand-in-hand with his romantic partner, desperate to leave behind the suffocating chatter that consumes them. The weight of his own self-doubt is his fiercest adversary, but the promise of clear, boundless skies beckons... his final lifeline. In this crucial moment, he implores her to hold on tight, for this may be their ultimate opportunity for salvation.
  • Ryan Tedder and OneRepublic bassist Brent Kutzle co-wrote "Runaway" with Ben Samama, Johnny Simpson and Nolan Sipe.

Dutch born, LA based, topliner/producer Ben Samama has had cuts with likes of Lil Wayne, KSI, Lukas Graham and Maggue Lindeman.

Johnny Simpson is one of Lauv's go-to producers. He also co-wrote Jonas Brothers' hit song "Waffle House."

Nolan Sipe's resumé also includes hit songs by Andy Grammer ("Honey, I'm Good"), Parmalee ("Just The Way") and Mimi Webb ("Ghost Of You").
  • Ben Samama and Brent Kutzle produced the energetic anthem with John Nathaniel. Montreal-based producer John Nathaniel has credits on eight tracks of OneRepublic's 2021 album, Human.
  • OneRepublic first performed "Runaway" at Taipei Arena in Taiwan during their Southeast Asia tour on March 8, 2023. They released it as a single on May 26, 2023.
  • The "Runaway" music video was directed by Tomás Whitmore. He filmed it in Singapore, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Tokyo during the band's Asian tour.
